Churches come together to celebrate Pentecost in beach hut blessings

Churches in Margate joined together for Pentecost on Sunday, holding a special service on the seafront, led by All Saints, Westbrook and St John the Baptist, Margate.

Crowds gathered around beach huts on the promenade for a Eucharist service as well as being offered blessings.

This was one of many celebrations across the ÑÇÖÞÂ鶹 marking Pentecost, which comes fifty days after Easter and brings the Easter season to an end.

Pentecost is a time when Christians recall how God’s Holy Spirit was given to the disciples after Jesus’ ascension, empowering them to begin the work of making disciples of all nations.

Among those taking part in the service was Fr Leigh, Interim Priest-in-Charge of All Saints, Westbrook and St John the Baptist, Margate. Talking afterwards, he said: “Beach hut blessings was a joyful celebration of Pentecost and a terrific way of making Jesus' universal, unequivocal love for each and every person visible by celebrating Mass on the beach.

“Looking out to sea, the morning was a powerful reminder that just as Jesus promised to be present with his first followers by sending the Holy Spirit upon them, so he walks with us still.”

Many people joined for the service, both passers-by and members of the church congregations.

Jacky Quigley, Churchwarden at All Saints, Westbrook said: “It was a beautiful experience on a bright sunny day out in the open declaring our love for Jesus.

“It left me very uplifted.”

During the service, Bishop Rose gave an address. Reflecting afterwards, she said: “It was wonderful to celebrate this significant moment in the Church, by the seaside.

“We shared fellowship with one another and reflected on the moment the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus’ disciples, a powerful reminder of God’s presence among us.”

Margate was just one place where Pentecost was celebrated across our diocese. At St Luke’s, Maidstone, a young person captured the service from their perspective on a digital camera, later . At St Mary’s, Goudhurst,  to symbolise the fire of the Holy Spirit.

The Church of England’s  came from the Lambeth Palace chapel, and was led by Archbishop Sarah.

In the service, the Archbishop preached on how confidence in the Gospel begins at home and speaks with members of the staff and community at Lambeth Palace about their work and faith.
